Real Madrid Turn Up Pressure on La Liga President Tebas Over Refereeing Controversies

Real Madrid Turn Up Pressure on La Liga President Tebas Over Refereeing Controversies

According to Spanish media outlet OKDiario, Real Madrid have reached the end of their patience with refereeing in Spanish football. The decisions made during their match against Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu have sparked intense frustration within the club, with Madrid believing that controversial calls have continued to accumulate and repeatedly worked against them.

Amid the growing anger, Javier Tebas has become a central figure. The La Liga president, who also serves as a vice-president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), has once again come under scrutiny from Real Madrid, led by Florentino Pérez.

Sources within Real Madrid said, "There are no coincidences, only the will and arrangements of God. What we at Real Madrid want to find out now is who this ‘God’ is who keeps coming after us.”

The strong statement emerged from within the club following the match against Villarreal, reflecting the deep frustration that has been building in the offices at Valdebebas.

Real Madrid are no longer willing to dismiss these incidents as coincidences. Instead, they are directly questioning those responsible for the governance of Spanish football, with Tebas among their main targets.

The club's frustration goes far beyond a single red or yellow card. Vinícius Júnior's sending-off, Konaté's yellow card, and reports from players and coaching staff about the conduct and comments of the assistant referee and fourth official during the Villarreal match have put the club on high alert.

The Real Madrid dressing room also struggles to understand why certain actions receive extremely severe punishment, while others—such as the tackle suffered by Federico Valverde recently—do not appear to attract the same level of disciplinary action.

However, Real Madrid's greatest concern lies in the wider governance structure.

Tebas is not only the president of La Liga but also a vice president of the RFEF. In addition, La Liga has representation on the body responsible for appointing referees. Given the influence these organizations have over how Spanish football operates, Real Madrid believes this structure deserves particular scrutiny.

The RFEF has confirmed that La Liga has one representative on the Professional Competition Refereeing Committee, a three-member body responsible for appointing on-field referees and VAR teams. Under the appointments announced in August 2025, Gregorio Manzano was nominated by La Liga, Fran Soto represented the RFEF, and Fernando Teixeira Vitienes was jointly agreed upon by both parties.

La Liga's involvement in this committee does not prove that Tebas has interfered in any specific refereeing decision. However, it helps explain why Real Madrid are focusing on the organizational structure of Spain's refereeing system.

The relationship between Florentino Pérez and Tebas has deteriorated significantly over the years. The European Super League, the agreement with investment fund CVC, broadcasting rights, and Tebas's criticism of Real Madrid TV have all contributed to repeated clashes between the club and La Liga.

Although Tebas has publicly acknowledged that he is a Real Madrid supporter, the club continues to regard him as one of its principal adversaries in football governance.

Now, refereeing has become another major point of conflict.

La Liga provides financial support for refereeing operations and has also participated in reforms alongside the RFEF. Real Madrid believe that, given La Liga's influence over the governance of the game, the refereeing system must demonstrate the highest possible levels of transparency and independence, particularly in competitions where a single decision can determine the outcome of a match.

The events against Villarreal proved to be the breaking point for the club's long-standing frustration. After VAR detected Vinícius pulling an opponent's hair, the Brazilian was sent off. Mourinho, meanwhile, chose not to face the media after the match.

Despite Real Madrid securing a 1-0 victory through a goal from Diomande, anger within the club remained intense.

Real Madrid do not necessarily dispute that a particular action may warrant a red card. Instead, they insist that the same standards must be applied to every team. This is the central message coming from Valdebebas: they are not seeking special treatment but demanding that the rules be enforced with equal strictness, regardless of which club is involved.

Real Madrid are turning their attention to Tebas and demanding answers.

At present, there is no evidence that the La Liga president influenced the refereeing decisions in Real Madrid's match against Villarreal. Nevertheless, the club's distrust of the relevant governing bodies is clear. Those inside Real Madrid believe they must continue to monitor and challenge the way the refereeing system operates.

The conflict between Real Madrid and the administrators of Spanish football is far from over.
