Juventus Could Offload Daniele Rugani in January as Defensive Competition Intensifies

Daniele Rugani's future at Juventus is becoming increasingly uncertain, with the Italian defender reportedly facing a possible departure during the January 2027 transfer window. Despite returning to Turin after a loan spell at Fiorentina, the centre-back has struggled to establish himself in Luciano Spalletti's plans. With several players competing for places in defence, Rugani could find opportunities increasingly limited as the season progresses.

Juventus have experienced an inconsistent start to their Serie A campaign, collecting 10 points from their opening five matches and sitting seventh in the standings. The team returned to winning ways against Atalanta before the international break, offering some relief after a difficult period that included a 3-2 defeat to Sassuolo. Injuries have also created challenges for Spalletti, forcing him to manage his available squad carefully across several positions.

However, the situation in central defence is considerably different from other areas of the pitch. Juventus have been without several important players, including Manuel Locatelli and Khephren Thuram, while goalkeeper Kamil Grabara is also expected to remain unavailable until next year. Kenan Yildiz, Jeremie Boga and Jeff Ekhator have faced their own fitness concerns, with possible absences extending into November or December. Despite these setbacks, the club has sufficient depth at centre-back.

The arrival of Jhon Lucumi during the summer transfer window has strengthened Juventus' defensive options, while Federico Gatti has remained at the club after nearly leaving earlier in the year. Gleison Bremer, Lucumi and Pierre Kalulu currently form the leading options in central defence, with Gatti and Lloyd Kelly providing additional cover. This competition has made it difficult for Rugani to secure regular playing time, leaving his role in the squad increasingly uncertain.

According to Italian newspaper Tuttosport, Juventus could consider selling Rugani when the transfer window reopens in January. His limited opportunities and the number of defenders ahead of him in the pecking order could make a departure a practical solution for both the player and the club. Although no final decision has been confirmed, the coming months are likely to be important in determining whether Rugani remains in Turin or seeks a fresh start elsewhere.
