Aleksander Čeferin Set for Historic Fourth UEFA Term as Battle for Football Power Intensifies

    0 0

Aleksander Čeferin is preparing to seek an unprecedented fourth term as UEFA president, marking a significant change from his previous decision to leave the position when his current mandate expires in 2027. The Slovenian, who first took charge of European football's governing body in 2016, has informed national association leaders that he intends to remain in office until 2031.

Čeferin's decision comes after UEFA changed its presidential term-limit rules at its 2024 Congress in Paris, allowing him to run again. The changes were controversial and faced opposition from the Football Association, while Čeferin had previously insisted that he would not take advantage of the new regulations. His decision to reconsider now adds a new dimension to the leadership of European football.

A further four years under Čeferin could provide UEFA with greater stability as tensions continue to grow between the European body and FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Čeferin has become increasingly critical of Infantino, particularly over plans involving private investment and the commercial management of FIFA tournament interests. UEFA has expressed concerns about Infantino's leadership and indicated that it wants a credible alternative to challenge him in the next FIFA presidential election.

Despite expectations that UEFA officials might agree on a candidate during a meeting in Berlin, no unified challenger to Infantino has emerged so far. The deadline for FIFA presidential candidates is November 18, leaving UEFA with limited time to settle on a preferred option. Former Tottenham defender Ramon Vega has already declared his intention to run, becoming the first officially announced challenger.

Infantino remains a powerful figure within global football, with considerable support across Africa, South America and parts of the Middle East. Meanwhile, Asian football leadership appears to be taking a more measured approach, with AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa indicating support for an internal group focused on potential FIFA governance reforms. Čeferin's decision to continue at UEFA could therefore play a major role in shaping the balance of power in world football over the coming years.
